The Descendants (score: 10)

Set against Hawaii backdrop, the Descendants is a masterpiece in comedy drama. Much like Sideways, the main character's emotional bitter sweet struggle against the absurdity of the situation he found himself in make for a great journey. I would say that the main character is a lot less active in solving the problem than in Alexander Payne's previous work, but the conclusion is satisfying nonetheless.

Mission Impossible 4 (score: 10)

The animated film genius Brad Bird have the super spy running into sand storms, scan his eye on a moving train, and climb the window of the tallest building in the world. The uncharacteristically nervous and desperate Ethan Hunt successfully make us care about the plot of the film because he and his team care about it too.

The Dead (score: 8)

While bringing nothing new to the table, The Dead is a classic zombie movie at its best. The story is about characters traveling from one point to another (as oppose to barricading) and avoiding zombies that make use of the Africa setting. I love zombie movies, but I don't think I have ever been scared of them this much since Night of the Living Dead.

The Help (score: 6.5)

The Help is a film is about racist whites (who are evil in every scenes) and enlightened white (singular) trying to offend one another, with the African American characters sometime act surprise that Emma Stone actually cares about them. I'm not too bothered by the overall plot structure like some do, but how can the director not notice that while the white characters talk, make decisions, and grow; the black characters stand like a furniture waiting to be arranged?

Transformers: Dark of the Moon (not scored)

I'm pretty sure this film is a remake of Revenge of the Fallen (the second one). It's the same movie, albeit with more likable side character and a plot that somewhat kinda almost make sense. The horrible destruction befalling Chicago is at least better than watching Shia running in slow motion in a desert with robots doing back-flips behind him for 30 minutes.

NOTE: I erased my last blog over my own review of this film. I did gave it a positive review, given how it's so much better than the second one. A lot of people went to see it came back to tell me how horrible it is. Of course it's horrible. How can you interpret "better than the second one" as "good"?

Midnight in Paris (unpopular opinion)

The first part of Midnight in Paris have the main character endure his fiance's annoying friend spouting out fake knowledge for the sake of appearing smart; and we had to endure that too. Afterwards, the main character traveled back in time to meet Picasso, the Fitzgerald's, Dhali and other famous artists and writers, and they talked and talked until I realized this movie was made by someone who is exactly like the fiance's friend.

A Separation (score: 10)

While the story took place in Iran and showcase several aspect of the culture, a story about a dysfunctional family having to band together to solve a problem that are worsen by the members' illogical decisions driven by prides and other character flaws could have taken place anywhere, as they are everybody's story. With superb acting and great plot, this movie is nothing short of incredible.

Resident Evil Afterlife (not scored)

I prefer to think of the Resident Evil series as "parodies with a straight face". So again, I love the series, but that's just my thing, please make no mistake about how bad they are. Consider that the last quarter of the movie is pretty much the Matrix with zombie dogs, and while there are about a hundred things wrong with that, I'm definitely not bored while watching it.
